A member of Nigeria’s Los Angeles ‘84 Olympics boxing team, Jeremiah Okorodudu has for the first time opened up on why he quit the sport that brought him so much fame, boxing.
Speaking in a chat with Sports Vanguard at the national stadium, Lagos, the once flamboyant boxer said he was getting older and his weight was no longer suitable for the sport.
“I could not go any further, no matter how I tried,” Okorodudu said, adding, “then I knew age was no longer on my side and I decided to quit in 1992.”
He however said he had not quit th sport entirely as he was now engaged in talent hunt and bringing up budding talents. “I am a national boxing coach and presently, my church has given me a big responsibility to organise a boxing championship for young members of the church interested in boxing.”
Okorodudu said he had no issues with the ministry of sports but felt he deserved better treatment as his salary was running into arrears after many months of waiting. “I think salary should be paid as and when due. Every worker deserves his pay as most of us do not know any other thing than sports.”
