Opuana tells NSC to start Olympics preparations now

By BEN EFE
Throws coach, Gabriel Opuana has urged National Sports Commission officials to skip rhetorical statements and start preparing the country’s athletes for the 2012 Olympic Games in London.

Outspoken Opuana opined that the nation’s sports control body has not learnt any lesson from the poor results late preparations and inadequate planning have brought to the country despite the billions of naira released by the government.

“We are talking about winning medals in the next All Africa games and the 2012 Olympics. What has the NSC done to give us the desired results.

“Do you know that some countries already have their Olympics team in camp for a long time now? For so many years we have all been saying the same thing again and again. For Gods sake who will listen to us and do something to salvage this aged-long problem of our sports,”

The NSC director of sports, Mr. Patrick Ekeji said in a recent interview that Nigeria will top the medals table at the All African Games September in Maputo, Mozambique. His confidence was based on Nigeria’s good outing at the Commonwealth Games last year in New Delhi, India.

“It is not every time we would get lucky. There were so many issues at the New Delhi Games, because the athletes did well nobody is talking about those issues.

“Look at how tattered the athletics team was. We could have done better if there was good planing and adequate preparations and that is why it necessary we begin early work that will guarantee better results,” said Opuana.
