The Federal Government of Nigeria has applauded world’s largest chipmaker, Intel Corporation for its immense contributions to the development of science and technology education in Nigeria especially with the promotion of Information technology (IT) tools and platform for secondary school students.
Minister of Science and Technology, Professor Muhammad Abubakar Kaoje expressed delight at the multinational for its e-learning (electronic learning) program which provides secondary school students and teachers with integrated learning package, content and platform.
The minister who was represented by Wahab Jimoh, Director of ICT, Ministry of Science and Technology commended Intel for “ its thoughtfulness and excellent sense of CSR, adding that the firm and its partners have been remarkable”.
The minister made the commendation while flagging off the opening ceremony of the 7th annual National Festival of Schools Sciences and quiz competition held at the Government Junior Secondary school, Jabi, Abuja, on Thursday.
The minister stated that “ if encouraged and supported by all stakeholders, the 3-day annual fair and other similar programs would aid students to appreciate and embrace IT education which has undoubtedly becomes a global currency for growth and development.”
According to him, every developed society is technology and knowledge driven, and this underscores the need to create platforms, opportunities and empowerment for the youth to enable them compete favourably on a global scale. As such, there is a pressing need to have a clear strategy in place to develop interest of students in science and technology.
He noted that the ministry is proudly supporting all programs and initiatives towards the promotion of science and technology and grooming of young scientists and engineers, adding that the development of science would serve as a veritable tool for nation building and fostering development.
He urged the students to take good advantage of the opportunity and make the best of themselves to their family and the nation.
In his remark, Joseph Nsengimana, Corporate Affairs Group Director, Intel Africa, said the multinational is glad to be a part of the landmark event alongside Shell, ISED and other partners.
Nsengimana stated that the event presents an opportunity for participants from sixty schools across 20 states of the six geo political zones to showcase their scientific talents and compete for the big prize which includes an all-expense paid trip to Los Angeles, United States, in May to participate at the global level of the science fair.
He noted Intel is genuinely committed to supporting platforms that can develop science and technology education among college students in Nigeria . He noted that “this was responsible for the resources committed to actualise the cause. We are offering Nigerian students and future leaders a golden opportunity to compete with their colleagues on a global scale at the 52nd edition of the international fair.”
“The annual fair was designed to offer a platform for students to demonstrate their mastery of the sciences and as well exhibit their creativity. The program is aimed at encouraging young people to take a keen interest in the sciences and mathematics particularly in today’s technology-driven world; it is indeed a platform for the discovery of future scientists,” he added. The Intel boss said: “The 2011 Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) billed to hold in Los Angeles, United States in May will bring about 2,000 exceptional high-school science students from more than 50 countries, regions and territories to compete for $4 million in scholarships and prizes at the world’s largest science, math, and engineering competition.”
