DEMOCRATIC People’s Party, DPP, Senatorial candidate in the Delta Central Senatorial District in the forthcoming general elections, Chief Pius Ewherido, yesterday, promised to strategically reposition the Urhobo ethnic group as the fifth largest ethnic group in Nigeria if elected into the Senate.
Ewherido, who stated this when he played host to Ughelli Correspondents Chapel of the Nigerian Union of Journalist, NUJ, in his country home, Ewu, Ughelli South Local Government Area, expressed his determination to ensure that the district gets its desired benefits that could accrue from gas production.
He said: “We of the Urhobo ethnic group have the largest gas reserve which can be tapped for economic purposes. If there is a government policy that addresses gas production, it means that our gas will not just be flared away.”
“Rather, it will be geared towards economic benefit by way of using it to power industry and generate revenue and we will get more from derivation and in terms of what we get from the Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commissio, DESOPADEC.”
“That same way we will get employment for our youths. There are many uses of gas and even electricity tariff will be reduced.” He noted that as the fifth largest ethnic nationality, the Urhobo ethnic group was not being given its rightful place in the political scheme of things in the country.
He said Urhobos needed a vibrant representation in the National Assembly, adding that he was better qualified for the job.
