Anxiety in Edo over Igbinedion’s prosecution

By SIMON EBEGBULEM
BENIN—AS the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, commence the prosecution of the former Governor of Edo State, Chief Lucky Igbinedion, at the Federal High Court in Benin tomorrow, over alleged money laundering, there is anxiety in the state Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, over alleged plans by the Commission to also arrest some officials, who worked under his administration.

The former Governor is facing a 66-count charge of money laundering and illegal withdrawal of funds belonging to the state, estimated at over N2billion, during his tenure as Governor of the state. Igbinedion ran the state from 1999-2007.
However, an EFCC source told Vanguard that the Commission had concluded plans to arrest a former Secretary to the State Government, during the Igbinedion administration, who is now a national leader of the ACN.

It was gathered that the ACN chieftain (Names withheld) may be arraigned in court next week. The panic in the Edo State ACN was quite understood because majority of the loyalists of the former Governor are members of the ACN.
