Golf federation explains President Cup shift

The Nigeria Golf Federation has announced the postponement of 2010 President Cup Golf Championship earlier scheduled to tee-off on December 13th at the IBB International Golf and Country Club in Abuja due to logistics reason.

The Director of Media of the body, Mr Luqman Owolewa announced in Lagos that consequent upon recent experiences, the technical department of the federation has been exposed to, especially at the World Congress, it was necessary that some of its routine be reviewed “at least to appreciable level”

He also said some issues on the sponsorship commitment of title sponsors and co_sponsorship that had reached final stage needed to be well sealed before the tournament could go on, and time was of the essence in wrapping these important aspects of the event up, hence the postponement.

According to him, “Yes, the tournament has been postponed, we know a lot of logistics that have been put in place had to be reversed but we must do things right that is what we agreed at the executive meeting prior to the postponement.

“I know a lot of players and clubs who have been preparing to grace it as it is the biggest event on our calendar here, but we have to also ask ourselves if we want the President Cup to just go ahead or want a better and well organized event to be staged. I believe the postponement was our ways of signing up to do a better job and it sure will be; when it returns next year.”

The last edition of the President Cup was staged at the Le Meridien Ibom Hotel and Golf Resort in December 2009, in Uyo and was won by late Christian Godfrey, (who died during the year after a car crash in Minna) and it is the flagship event of the Nigerian Golf Federation.

“We have come to make the game better, and whenever we have the opportunity to inject new ideas in better running of the game, we have the responsibility to do us on behalf of all golfers in the country and sponsors” he added.

He also said that a new date would be announced soonest for the event in 2011 adding that there talks already to stage a double edition of the event next year to compensate for the postponement.
