Umuahia — The Anglican Bishop of Amichi Diocese in Anambra State, Rt. Rev. Ephraim Ikeakor, has lambasted South East governors and university teachers who have been on strike for over four months, describing their attitude as “insensitive, uncommitted and parochial”.
Ikeakor condemned their attitude towards the students in their universities.
He said: “I am particularly disappointed by the insensitivity and non-commitment of the South East governors and the parochial stance taken by ASUU of the state universities towards the resolution of the face-off that has led to the closing of the universities for almost four months now.
“The governors of South East states have disappointed me by the insensitivity and non-commitment they have shown towards resolving the disagreement. It does not tell well of them, more so when they have continued to give the impression that education is one of the issues their government is giving serious attention.
ASUU, on the other hand, is very parochial in their demand. Why can’t they shift grounds? Why should they be so unbending in their demand? I am disappointed by them and the governors of the zone.”
“It is unfortunately that the students are suffering as a result of the action of these two groups of people who have shown their unbridled insensitivity and parochial attitude on the issue of the strike. I urge them to rethink and understand that God is watching them”, Ikeakor noted.
Bishop however disclosed that the Diocese of Amichi as a way of contributing to development of education in the country will start its own Seminary in September next year.
“The reason for starting the seminary is because of the dwindling standard of public schools. If we want to be truthful to ourselves, you will agree with me that the standard of public schools and the students and pupil they are raising is dwindling academically, morally and spiritually, so we really want to give serious touch to the standard of education to these young people” , Bishop Ikeakor said.
According to him, the seminary will groom the students so that they will equally know God.
“You know that an educated wicked person is more dangerous than an armed robber and a kidnapper. So if you educate somebody without showing him the way to Christ, that person is good as a devil. We want to give quality education and quality life so that they can be useful to both the society and the church”, he said.
The Seminary which is sited at Osumenyi in Nnewi South Local Government Area will be known as Masters Vessel Seminary.
