AWKA- THE authorities of the Federal Polytechnic, Oko in Anambra State have instituted an annual lecture and award ceremony in honour of the former vice president, Dr. Alex Ekwueme who founded the institution before it was taken over by the Federal government.
Rector of the Polytechnic, Professor Godwin Onu told newsmen at Oko, Tuesday, that the first of the lecture series and awards would take place tomorrow at the main campus of the institution. The ceremony will coincide with Ekwueme’s birthday.
According to him, this year’s lecture which is titled, “The legacies of Dr. Alex Ekwueme to governance, political and social development in Nigeria,” will be delivered by the former minister of education, Prof Ben Nwabueze (SAN), while His Royal Majesty, Dr. Edmund Dakoru, Mingi X11 and Amanyanabo of Nembe Kingdom will be the chairman.
Among those expected at the lecture include second republic president, Alhaji Shehu Shagari, Governors Peter Obi and Rotimi Amechi of Anambra and Rivers States respectively, as well as former Governor of Anambra State, Dr Chukwuemeka Ezeife who will all receive special awards for their leadership roles in the country.
Onu said the decision to institute the annual lecture in honour of Ekwueme was in appreciation of his contributions towards the development of education in Nigeria.
He said: “Even before Ekwueme set up this Polytechnic, Oko people were enjoying his scholarship. In governance, he had made a lot of sacrifices to ensure peaceful coexistence of Nigerians. So we thought it wise to immortalize him through this annual lecture.”
