The perceived interest of President Goodluck Jonathan in contesting next year’s election appears to be creating some hurdles for him with the realisation, by some senators, that his victory in the election will entail the total re-zoning of several key public offices.
One of such public offices to be re-zoned is the Senate Presidency which is currently held by the North, specifically the North Central.
The position is occupied by Chief David Mark (from Benue State) and he is the first northerner to hold the position since the return of civil rule in 1999.
Sunday Vanguard gathered in Abuja that a growing number of senators are beginning to have a second thought on their support for President Jonathan largely for what a source called enlightened self-interest.
“The Senators have just discovered that Gen. Obasanjo’s support for President Jonathan is for the General’s self interest.
“They have information on the deal Obasanjo reached with him which is that once Jonathan becomes president, Senate
Presidency will be re-zoned to the South.
“That will inevitably pave the way for Iyabo Obasanjo to have a shot at the post.
During the Obasanjo years, the Senate Presidency was zoned to the South-East and the speakership of the House of Representatives to the North-West.â€
