Farmers task Abia govt on rural roads

Umuahia—Chief Agwu Udensi, Chairman, Abia State Chapter of Genuine Farmers Association of Nigeria, has told the state government to construct rural roads to ease transportation of farm produce to urban areas.

“Most farmers in the state do not need money, but access roads so that they can easily get access to farm inputs and also convey their farm products  to the markets,” Udensi said, yesterday, in Umuahia.

He said provision of access roads would help farmers boost food production.
“We have the capacity to feed residents of the state but our only constraint is transport,” he said.

Udensi expressed satisfaction on the cordial relationship existing between members of his group and the National Root Crops Research Institute, Umudi-ke, commending the institute for providing farmers with improved cassava variety and other inputs.

He advised that government should deal directly with members of his group “instead of being deceived by the activities of the All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN), and describing AFAN in the state as a “political organisation”.

Udensi alleged that the leadership and members of AFAN were not farmers, saying that they established AFAN for their “personal benefits.”
