Experts make case for family planning

ABUJA—Experts in the health sector have said family planning remains the best option in reducing maternal and infant mortality in Nigeria, stressing that Millennium Development Goals 4 & 5 cannot be achieved without robust family planning.

The experts told newsmen yesterday at a forum, organised by Development Communications,  DEVCOMS, Network, “on strategic family planning methods to mitigate maternal mortality”,  advocated for commitment of political, social and religious leaders at the Federal, States and Local governments levels to back repositioning of Family Planning into the forefront of national agenda with sustained advocacy, financial and technical resources.

In her presentation on “Family planning as a strategic element for reducing maternal and infant mortality”, Mrs. Busola Salako, of the Nigerian Urban Reproductive Health Initiative (NURHI), said, “Family planning simply means giving couples the ability to choose the number, healthy timing and spacing of their children”.
