NUPENG, firm on war path

By Festus Ahon
UGHELLI—THE National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers, NUPENG, ASCA branch, Sapele, Delta State and the management of ASCA Group of Companies are at logger head over workers’ poor condition of service.

The workers in a protest in Sapele, also decried the refusal of ASCA’s management to recognise their union, adding that a letter to that effect had been duly sent by the national executive of NUPENG on  March 16, 2010, directing the management of the company to deal with the union on issue of workers welfare.

The branch chairman, Mr Jacob Omuvwie, who fielded questions from newsmen during the protest,  said staff members’ condition of service was poor. He said that against conventional labour practice, that the company has consistently engaged casual workers up to period of three years without staffing them.

Alleging that the management of the company forced workers to go to work on weekends and stay beyond official closing hour without any overtime paid, he added that all effort to dialogue with the management had failed to yield any positive results.
