PORT HARCOURT— GOVERNOR Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers State has decried killing and molestation of journalists doing their legitimate duties.
The governor, who spoke when members of Rivers State chapter of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, staged a protest to Government House, denouncing incessant attack on journalists in the country.
The governor, who was represented by his deputy, Mr. Tele Ikiru, also used the occasion to reiterate the administration’s commitment to transparency and accountability, just as he tasked the NUJ to endeavour to flush out quacks in its midst.
“It is a painful thing when journalists are killed in the course of doing their legitimate duties. Those killing journalists for the truth they stand for should desist because nature will catch up with them.
“Ensure that your profession is not an all-comers affair; it is the quacks among you that exhibit irresponsible behaviour that tend to betray your profession,he said.
Chairman of the state chapter of the NUJ, Mr Opaka Dokubo who led the protesting journalists said the protest march was part of activities marking the 2010 World Press Freedom Day. Adding that the protest was to draw attention to the plights of journalists in the country.
