By Kingsley Omonobi
The Police have smashed a notorious armed robbery gang which killed an Ekiti politician, Mr. Kehinde Fasubaa, on 3 January 2009, as well as the officer in charge of SARS, Ekiti State, CSP Mohammed Manua and over 20 Police officers between 2008 and January this year.

Police investigations and confessions from the gang members, numbering 20, already in custody, also revealed that the gang whose areas of operation include, Delta, Ondo and Ekiti states equally killed Oba Joseph Adeleye Oritsagbemi, the Attah of Aiyede-Ekiti and his driver on the 29th of January this year, as well as the Acting Provost of the College of Education, Ikere Ekiti, Dr. G. O. Olowoyo and his driver same day.

Investigations further revealed that the gang whose leader is one Owie Charles Patrick, has been accused of kidnapping the Chairman of Kabba Local government council in Kogi State in 2008, and Kaduna State’s SSG in 2009 before he was recovered in Warri, and frontline transport magnate in Edo State, Chief Bob Izua in 2009.

According to Vanguard sources, one of the leading gang members in custody, Abiodun Olasuyi a.k.a. ‘Abbe City’, who runs a night club, confessed that they were sent to kill late Kehinde Fasubaa but when asked to state who sent them to perpetrate the act, he could not finger any body, saying that an intermediary gave them the job.

The Police source however said, they don’t work with dropping of names especially when the supposed intermediaries are persons, who from all indications, have never met the suspects and who the suspects do not recognize.

According to the source, “When the Chairman of Kabba Local Government was kidnapped in 2008, three policemen in his escort were killed. Before then, at Itakpe, from where the gang launched the operation, the DPO of the Police station got information that some hoodlums were planning to strike and went there with some men to thwart the plan”.

“Unknown to the DPO, the gang laid ambush for him and he (DPO) was shot at and injured while the four officers with him were killed. After kidnapping the Chairman, they (robbers) snatched the Police Hilux van in his convoy and walkie talkies, and as they got away, they shot at any policeman they met on their way, killing no fewer than 15 Police officers that very day,” the source said.
