Egwu’s wife to empower widows

By Dennis Agbo

ABAKALIKI—WIFE of the immediate past Minister of Education, Mrs. Eunice Egwu has launched a programme aimed at alleviating the sufferings of  indigent widows in Ebonyi State through cash, food and other donations.

Mrs. Egwu, who had during her days as the first lady of Ebonyi State, established Widow Care Foundation, at the weekend distributed cash, wrappers,  food stuff, toiletries among others  to over 500 indigent widows, drawn from the three senatorial zones of the state, promising never to stop the gesture as long as God keeps her alive.

She said that the widows’ party was a yearly event she embarked upon even as a young girl but manifested more as wife of the then Governor of the state, when she established the Widow Care Foundation with the slogan of “widow’s reliable friend.”

Performing the presentations at the Widow Care Foundation office in Abakaliki, Mrs. Egwu said it is God that has been providing the facilities, adding, however that as a foundation, it receives donations from individuals, groups and institutions, adding them to whatever the foundation generates from its skill acquisition projects and other sundry sources.

“It is yearly event and I am not going to stop doing it until I leave this planet and as long as resources come from God. I started it when I was a young girl and I can’t stop it now,” she pledged.

Programmes Manger of the Foundation, Mrs. Bukola Ogbueli, said  the foundation does the yearly ritual to make the rural indigent widows feel cared for and loved, adding  that the women are picked randomly from across the three geopolitical zones of the state.

“You know the economy is bad and some of them may not have anything to celebrate Easter, while some of them from year to year don’t have new wrappers and so what we do is to give good quality wrappers to them,” said Ogbueli.
