Dutse — A commercial bus yesterday ran over six primary school pupils, leaving two girls dead and four others seriously injured at Andaza village in Kiyawa Local Government Area of Jigawa State.

The unfortunate incident was said to have occurred around 9:30 a.m when the  pupils who left the school premises for their morning break were said to have crossed the road on their way back to the school when they were hit by the commercial bus that was on top speed.

One of the teachers in the school, Malam Shehu Ibrahim, who was an eye witness told newsmen that the driver was on high speed.

Said he: “I was standing in the middle of the road holding two of the school children, while their prefects were holding red flags in both directions of the roads as usual, when the bus driver who was coming from Kiyawa on high speed refused to stop even though  he saw the trailer that stopped in from of us. He overtook the trailer and ran over the pupils and crushed them all.”

According to him, the driver tried to escape, but was caught by a good Samaritan who chased the driver who had diverted his bus into the bush with all the passengers in the bus.

The teacher who was visibly shaken by the unfortunate incident, said he was nearly crushed by the running bus too, saying he narrowly escaped by the grace of God. “God saved me because I don’t know how I managed to jump out of the road,” he said.

He explained that the school authority usually put stop signs with a teacher by the side of the road each morning to control the traffic during breaks, adding that with the alert signs, drivers usually slow down to allow free movement of the children.

Contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Abdu Jinjiri, confirmed the incident, saying the driver had been arrested and was now in their custody.
