Ogun PDP tackles speaker

By Kolade Larewaju
ABEOKUTA – LEADERS of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Obafemi-Owode yesterday disowned the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Mr. Tunji Egbetokun over his statement that PDP lacked internal democracy, saying that he was speaking for himself.

Addressing newsmen, the party leaders said Speaker Egbetokun was not in a position to make such a statement as he was a beneficiary of the democratic culture of the party, through which he emerged as the candidate of the party for the House of Assembly.

Speaking through the Chairman of the Local Government Service Commission, Chief Kola Olumide, the party leaders said “it was rather strange given the fact that his emergence as our representative to the State House of Assembly was a function of internal democracy.

“His unwarranted statement has further confirmed our belief that the Speaker is  fanning the ember of discord in the party and he has clearly shown to the whole world where he belongs.

“We state unequivocally that the entire statement was his own and cannot be the view of members of the party in our Local Government.

“Therefore, the entire members of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Obafemi-Owode Local Government dissociate ourselves from the statement of Speaker Tunji Egbetokun and state that he is on his own.”

Chief Olumide said contrary to the claims of Egbetokun, out of about 204 ward executives in the Local Government, more than 180 were on the side of the government and challenged the Speaker to call the meeting of his ward to assess the number of people that are still with him.
