Ministry ordered to pay compensation to former Speaker

By Austin Ogwuda
ASABA—MEMBERS of the Delta State House of Assembly yesterday ordered the State Ministry of Lands, Surveys and Urban Development to pay compensation to the former Speaker of the House, Dr. Olisa Imegwu for demolishing his personal building under construction in Asaba.

This followed the adoption of a report by the House Committee on Public Petitions headed by Mr. Franc Enekorogha during yesterday’s sitting. The resolution was unanimously adopted after considering the report.

The report faulted the decision of the Lands Ministry to demolish the structure noting that “the ministry failed to prove the reasons for the demolition exercise. It is trite law that he who asserts must prove. Since the ministry failed to do so, we do not have a choice but to resolve the only issue in favour of the petitioner.”
The House therefore ordered that “the Ministry of Lands, Surveys and Urban Development be directed to evaluate the damage done to the property situate on plot 1.2x road on Umuonaji road and pay commensurate compensation to the petitioner.”
