2011: PDP chieftain urges Jonathan to work hard

By Emeka Mamah

Kaduna — A Chieftain of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, Senator Abubakar Girei, has advised the Acting President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, to work hard within the few months he will act for President Umaru Yar’Adua to ensure that he becomes the party’s candidate in 2011.

Girei said Nigerians and the North in particular would not mind where the next president comes from despite the PDP’s zoning arrangement if the person occupying the highest political office in the country was performing well

He said Jonathan stood a very good chance of becoming the next elected president if he justified the confidence reposed in him within the short period.

On Petroleum and Energy Ministers
He, however, urged the Acting President to sack the Petroleum and Energy Ministers, Dr. Rilwanu Lukeman and Dr. Lanre Babalola over alleged incompetence.

Girei said the Energy Minister “has no business remaining in office” having failed to meet the target on the Federal Government’s promise to deliver 6,000 megawatts of electricity by December last year just as his Petroleum Resources counterpart had proved that he was incapable of ensuring uninterrupted fuel supply to Nigerians in the last four mouths.

He spoke in an interview with Vanguard in Kaduna, weekend.

Said he: “We must condemn people who have failed to achieve results; who have failed to achieve the targets set by themselves.

“We did not set the target of 6,000 megawatts for this government. They themselves set the target. We have not seen it.

“The fact that they have failed to achieve this 6,000 megawatts by the end of December last year, is failure on their part and we should not accept this.

Asks jonathan to dissolve cabinet
“It is not justifiable for him to dissolve the entire cabinet but nothing stops him. For example, in the power sector, they have given us a target that they are going to give us 6,000 megawatts by the end of December 2009.

“In fact, it has deteriorated. Nothing stops him from sacking everybody in the power sector.

“The energy sector, up till now, we are still battling with scarcity of fuel; scarcity of cooking gas, scarcity of almost everything in the petroleum sector.

“What stops him from today sacking the Minister of Petroleum and all of them? What stops him from carrying out a very serious overhaul of the NNPC, the PPMC, and the whole of the oil sector?

“Because, this country, unless and until we start penalizing those who cannot achieve targets, we set targets for somebody; whether he is a minister or he is a governor or whatever, if he fails to achieve that target, then he has no business being there.

“If the Ministers of Power and Petroleum Resources have any conscience, as far as I am concerned, they should have resigned because they have failed woefully.

“Now, Jonathan cannot afford to continue with these failures, otherwise he will also fail. There are quite a number of ministers that have been categorized as failures like this,” Senator Girei said.
