Recently, about ten Nigerian newspapers reported a press statement believed to have been signed by more than 50 public figures, calling on Yar’Adua to resign immediately or allow a medical panel to confirm his fitness to govern. The press statement asked Umaru Yar’Adua to “immediately and unconditionally hand over to the Vice-President, Dr Goodluck Jonathan to complete the current term of office.†As Acting President, the 50 signatories said Jonathan should then conduct the next general elections on the basis of the report of the electoral reform committee headed by Justice Mohammed Lawal Uwais. The nation’s political atmosphere is heating up unnecessarily over the issue of President Yar’Adua’s ill-health. This is putting the entire question into a negative perspective altogether.
Before you take steps know where you are
Is there any way that we women can ‘corner’ this weeks article and prevent the men from reading it since we have all discovered this column has most men’s favorite column. This week, I really want to address women. This is we, coming together as women and telling ourselves the truth. We owe that to each other.
“January 15, 1966 not Nzeogwu’s Coupâ€
An attempt by the revenge coup perpetrators to justify the killing of General Aguiyi-Ironsi by linking him with the January 15 failed coup is not accepted by Peter Enahoro’s account. He says that the General was in fact marked down for elimination by If eajuna and that one man that could have exonerated Aguiyi-Ironsi was the Inspector-General of Police, the late Alhaji Kam Salem who the author says telephoned the military commander to inform him that the police were reporting usual troop movements in Lagos.
On grounds of ill-health
It is said that the Special Adviser on Information and Strategic to the Lagos State Government, Mr. Segun Ayobolu, voluntarily withdrew his services on grounds of ill-health earlier this week. It warms the cockles of my heart that he is a kindred spirit, in the sense that he runs a backpage column every month in the Alausa Alert newspaper.
Govt should be alive to its responsibility – Sen Abaribe
The civil war ended close to 40 years ago and it is sad to realize that we still have landmines, explosives, and all manner of bombs still littering the landscapes in the whole of the South East.
