Last February, we crowned Dorothy Atake as the first Allure Style Icon – a search we instituted as a physical embodiment of what Allure represents: The promotion of brains, good looks, good body and impeccable style.
In-house, we came up with a list of 50 names which were trimmed to twenty. We published these names and asked readers to make their choice. By weekly eliminations, five finalists were selected. They were Kate Henshaw Nuttal, Nike Oshinowo, Celine Loader, Nkiru Anumudu and Dorothy Atake.
Eventually, Celine Loader was voted second runner-up and Kate Henshaw-Nuttal first runner-up. On February —, the winner, Dorothy Atake, received her plaque and prize of a 42-inch plasma television. Kate Henshaw-Nuttal also got a 42-inch plasma television while Celine Loader received a 34-inc plasma television.
For this second edition, we have adopted a slightly different approach. We invited fashion stylists and designers, experts on the issue of style, to team up with Allure to come up with a list of names to be presented to readers. With the help of these experts, we came up with thirty names, fifteen women and fifteen men. Yes, men! It was agreed by all at the selection session that Nigerians male and female are equally formidable style-wise. Therefore, men should not be excluded.
First, we had to define the criteria for selecting the next Allure Style Icon. These were the criteria:
Size: A nominee must not be fat, nor have pot belly. He or she must look fit, with every part of his or her body in the right proportion.
Carriage: Carriage and comportment is of paramount importance. An icon must carry himself or herself well.
Clothes Fit: Nominees must be one of those who wear clothes that fit and who dress their age appropriate.
Consistency: A style icon must have continued to display consistency in his or her style.
On the following pages, we have published pictures of the 30 nominees. The final choice of who becomes the icon is now left to you, our readers. All the persons short-listed qualify but we can only have one male and one female style icon in the end. To keep your favourite in reckoning, you will need to help him or her stay on by voting him or her every week. Please read the promo below for details. Voting will commence next week.
On behalf of Allure, I thank the experts who left their busy schedules to come to Vanguard for the selection exercise. Many thanks to: Ifeoma Williams, Nikki Khiran, Prince Akanni Oyefeso, Frank Osodi, Omoyemi Akerele and Dr Vivian Oputa.
