NGF begins a new dawn with President Cup

President of the Nigeria Golf Federation (NGF) Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola has assured that the 2009 President Cup Golf Tournament, would be bigger and better, while adding that President Musa Yar’Adua has given his words to be part of the tournament.

His words: “Mr President has endorsed this tournament and has even given his words to be with us so we are believing he would be with us. This is his tournament and he has supported us adequately, so we would be honoured to have him with us. that we are in a position to obtain he permission and authority of mr President to go on with the tournament is also a big plus’.

The President Cup is slated to hold from December 1st to 6th at the Ibom/Le Meridien Ibom Hotel and Golf Resort, Uyo in Akwa Ibom.
The Osun State governor added that the Senate President, David Mark, who is also an avid golfer, would also be part of the tournament.

Supported by board members, Luqman Owolewa, Austin Ojomo, Moses Anabui and Rev Mrs Ishola Williams, Prince Oyinlola, hinted that the tournament would be used to set up appropriate ranking systems/ order of merit.
“The President Cup is our first major outing and we intend to use the tournament to jump start the development programmes of the so that together we can realize the lofty goal of making Nigeria one of the leading sporting nations by the year 2020.

Continuing he said, “The results of the amateur category particularly in category one (0-5 handicap) will be used by the federation to put in place the over due effective ranking system/order of merit. It is this order of merit that will determine Nigerian representatives in international amateur golf tournaments”.

Professional would tee off the contest, playing over 72 holes from 1st to 4th of December and amateur’s round is scheduled over 36 holes of the concluding days.

The last edition of the event was held at the Port Harcourt Golf Club in Rivers State in December 2007 and won by Christian Godfrey of IBB International Golf and Country Club in Abuja .
