OWERRI—Imo State Governor, Chief Ikedi Ohakim, has challenged the Nigerian National Volunteer Service (NNVS) to be more proactive, innovative and dynamic in the execution of its assignments.
Ohakim threw the challenge in an address at a two-day quarterly consultative meeting of the NNVS, held in Owerri, Imo State capital.
Describing NNVS as “a catalyst for the enhancement of the socio-economic status of the citizens,†the Governor disclosed that his administration has been encouraging volunteers and selfless service through grants in aid, subventions and other forms of assistance to non-governmental organisations.
He listed other bodies that are enjoying government grants as community based organisations, the physically challenged, the aged, infirm, victims of disasters, drug and psychiatric cases in the state and reaffirmed his commitment to the ideals of volunteerism.
In his goodwill message, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Alhaji Yayale Ahmed, promised that his office will do all within its power to mobilize and galvanize Nigerians in promoting selfless service and sustainable national development.
The meeting was attended by representatives from the 36 states of the federation and Abuja.
