Akunyili tasks Nigerians on image laundering

Jos – Minister of Information and Communication, Prof. Dora Akunyili has challenged Nigerians to fight the negative tag given to them abroad by showcasing the positive virtues of the country.

She said, while launching the Rebranding Nigeria Campaign for North Central Zone, yesterday, that there were many positive things about the country that should give it a good image, but regretted that attention was being focused on the negative aspects.

“Nigeria has many success stories which we can present to the international audience. Unfortunately, for too long, we have left others to tell our story. We need to believe in ourselves so that we can define who we are by ourselves,” she said.

The minister said the rebranding project should be seen much more than a slogan or logo, but something to inspire patriotism in Nigerians at home and abroad, adding that Nigerians have maintained silence for too long on the way the country and her citizens were being stigmatised.

She regretted that although many Nigerians were making waves in various fields in different parts of the world, these achievements go unappreciated or unnoticed by those who prefer to play up the negative aspects of the country.

She, therefore, urged Nigerians and the mass media to assist in projecting the positive achievements of the country and her citizens to other parts of the world.

Akunyili disclosed plans to have rebranding clubs in secondary schools “as a way of catching them young particularly at this critical stage of character formation.”
