ENUGU – FIRST civilian Governor of Anambra State, Dr. Chukwuemeka Ezeife, says the people of the state would continue to seek divine intervention to ensure the success of the forthcoming governorship election and good governance in the state.

Dr. Ezeife, who led citizens of the state, including members of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) for the prayer session in Awka on Saturday, said with the current prayers in the state, anybody thinking of rigging the next election would not succeed.

He said the massive turnout at the special prayer session showed the zeal of the citizens to see that peace and security, good governance, and free and fair election holds in the state next year.

The former Governor said the motive for the prayer was beyond politics, stressing that the leaders had stepped up “mobilization and conscientisation” of the citizens towards making sure that henceforth their votes count at all elections beginning with the governorship polls in February 2010.

Also speaking, former Minister of Health, Prof. ABC Nwosu, said Anambra needs prayers now more than any other time. “We have gathered  and prayed and God has heard us.”

He also expressed fears that the high number of governorship aspirants scrambling for the governorship of Anambra may spell doom politically.   “In the past, when I contested, we were ten and we felt it was too much but now, we are talking about 40 aspirants. I am very worried. It is disturbing,” he said.

A governorship aspirant of the Peoples Democratic Party, Mr. Emeka Nwandu, who participated in the prayer session, commended the organisers, saying going by what has been happening in Anambra state, there was need for the people to come together and seek the face of God.
