Makurdi – Nigeria’s Ambassador to Canada, Prof. Iyorwuese Hagher, has pleaded with striking Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to call off its industrial action in the interest of helpless Nigerian students.
Hagher who urged the striking lecturers to return to the classrooms assured them the Yar’Adua-led administration would not fail to address the issues raised by the union.
He acknowledged the decay in the educational sector but noted that the Federal Government had already set in motion necessary mechanisms to address the nagging issues confronting the Nigerian educational system.
Hagher urged the aggrieved university teacher to “please show magnanimity by returning to the classrooms in the interest of our children, while negotiations are still ongoing.â€
The ambassadors hence implored ASUU to consider the trauma students are currently undergoing, the misery of their parents and the concern of eminent Nigerians in the lingering face off and call off their action.
He lamented the distortion in the academic calendar of Nigerian universities as a result of incessant strikes in the system, advising that the university system could not afford further disruption in the academic calendar of universities.
