11 passengers die in Lokoja accident

ELEVEN persons were burnt beyond recognition at the Muritala Mohammed Bridge in ghastly auto accidents involving a Toyota Hiace bus  in Banda, Kotonkare LGA of Kogi State yesterday.

The Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Commission, (FRSC) Yomi Asaniyan, who confirmed the sad incidents to newsmen said the incidents took place at the wee hours of yesterday killing all the occupants on board the vehicle.

Saturday Vanguard gathered that the accidents occurred when the driver of the commuter bus whose registration number could not be ascertained convening people from one of the Eastern States lost control and rammed into a stationery truck at the last end of the bridge.

“It was a tragic situation. at about 4.30am we heard the shouts of occupants of the vehicle but before we could rushed there,  it had already gone up in flames, “an eye witness who simply gave his name as Usman said.

Meanwhile, Kogi State House of Assembly yesterday in a resolution called on the Federal Road Maintenance Agency (FERMA) and the Ministry of Transport to as a matter of urgency look into the deplorable condition of the Muritala Mohammed Bridge saying that the rate of carnage on the bridge left much to be desired.

Minority Leader of the House and Mmember Representing Kotonkarfe Constituency, Tanko Abrahaman  who moved a motion under matters of national importance said several deaths had occurred on the bridge in recent times, adding that the situation was fast becoming worrisome.
