WARRI—THE Deadly Underdogs in the riverine Benin River area of Delta State have warned the Joint Task Force (JTF) not to establish any military base in the Egbema kingdom axis of Warri North Local Government Council area, saying the action is a threat to the Federal Government’s amnesty to militants.
The group in a statement signed by its leader, Akpasubewei Ezekiel, said it was opposed to the attempt by the state government and the JTF to establish a military base in Egbema Kingdom and would resist the move as it is bound to worsen the security situation in the region, adding “everybody in Nigeria now realizes that the military presence in the region is a major factor why the crisis in the Niger Delta persists”.
The group said the deployment of nine gunboats by the JTF and Delta State Waterways Security Committee, who came to survey the area with a view to stationing a houseboat to accommodate the soldiers were to intimidate, frustrate and destroy the psyche of law abiding citizens of the area and should be condemned by well meaning Deltans.
They therefore called on the Federal Government to prevail on the state government to rescind its decision on the deployment of soldiers in the Ijaw area of Egbema Kingdom
But a government source told Vanguard that the state government is not in the position to order military personnel to establish military base anywhere, noting that it is purely a military and Federal Government affairs based on intelligence report.
