OWERRIâ€”The immediate past Executive Secretary of Onitsha North Local Government Area of Anambra State, Mr. Godwin Okwara, has been arraigned forÂ murder before an Imo State High Court sitting in Orlu.
The 49-year old politician and native of Umuokwaraoke, Umuchima, Ideato South Local Government Area of Imo State, was accused of killing his younger brother, Chinedu Okwara, in the charge brought against him by the state.
According to the charge,Â the accused person, on November 5, 2007, at Umuchima, Ideato, within the Orlu Judicial Division, did murder one Chinedu Okwara, contrary to Section 319(1) of the Criminal Code, Cap 30 Vol. II of Eastern Nigeria, 1963, as applicable to Imo State of Nigeria.
The accused person pleaded not guilty afterÂ the charge was read to him. His counsel afterwards,Â informed the court that he had filed an application for for his clientâ€™s bail.
The prosecuting counsel, Mrs. C.C Dimkpa, told the court that the office of the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) was not been served with the bail application.
The trial judge, Justice L. C. Azuama read read out an affidavit in the courtâ€™s file, which showed that efforts were made to serve the DPP but the office refused to accept it, adding that the court was deeming the application as having been served.
Before adjourning the matter to July 10, 2009, Justice Azuama gave the DPP 48 hours to file her reply, and ordered that the accused person be remanded in prison custody.
