How Uduaghan tackles oil spillage
The report of a joint venture study by the United Nations environmental programme and the Federal Government of Nigeria recently presented to President Goodluck Jonathan has copiously indicted the oil prospecting companies with particular reference to the Shell Petroleum Development Company, SPDC.
The future of NYSC
THE three weeks I spent in the NYSC Orientation camp in Argungu, Kebbi State in 2002 were some of the best weeks of my life. A Lagos ‘boy’ who schooled in Delta, I used to think that the sun rose and set in the South. So you can understand my surprise at the wonderful things and people I discovered during the NYSC orientation and later as a year-long resident of Birnin Kebbi, the capital of Kebbi.
Rivers without water
Governor Chibuike Amaechi of Rivers State had on August 18, 2008 assured the people of the State that the water programme of his administration would not fail. “Unlike before” were the exact words he used to underline how ‘serious’ the promise was.
As Gov. Orji hits the ground running
WHO says political and economic freedom is not desirable? It is, especially in a democratic setting. If not, why did someone like the iconic Nelson Mandela spend 25 years in prison to make his country what it is today? Why did our own great Zik, Awolowo and other nationalists, put their lives on the line to ensure that our country, Nigeria, is free from colonial imperialism.
To Anambra workers
On August 15, the feast of Assumption, workers who had been on strike for five working days and those who had been on strike for a much longer time – the judiciary and health workers –resumed work. Let me, therefore, start by thanking the workers and labour unions for listening to the voice of reason at last. Let me also thank the Anambra State Elders Advisory Council, the Anambra State Traditional Rulers Council and Anambra State Association of Town Unions, ASATU, as well as other organisations and individuals who contributed to the resolution of the labour crisis.
The unauthorised story of Abba Moro
What the Minister of Interior, Comrade Abba Moro lacks in body frame, he makes it up with unbridled courage and this explains the speed with which he has hit the ground running since he assumed office.
Awka tribunal sack: Good riddance
At the conclusion of the April 2011 general elections it was considered expedient to have three election petitions tribunals established forAnambra State.
Factors of improved power supply
There are signs that Nigerians have begun to experience a remarkable improvement in power supply. This, from my experience as an electricity consumer, is true for the past two weeks or thereabouts.
Osa Director and his shadow boxing
The Vanguard interview with Mr Osa Director, published on Saturday, August 13, made an interesting reading. His responses to the questions were smooth, almost silk-like. I didn’t expect anything less from him, after all, he has practiced as a journalist for over 20 years, rising to the very top in the process.
The single term proposal
The proposal by President Goodluck Jonathan for a single six-year tenure for presidents and governors, and an extension of tenure for National Assembly members, has been generating a lot of controversy in the polity.
