The dwindling fortunes of the Peoples’ Democratic Party in the South West is no doubt giving President Goodluck Jonathan sleepless nights.

For Edo Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, these indeed are interesting times. Friday victory of Action Congress of Nigeria ACN candidate in 2007 governorship election in Osun State was indeed a long road for Engr.Rauf Aregbesola who comes across as a dogged fighter and political long distant runner.

It was in March 2008 that the immediate past national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Prince Vincent Ogbulafor boasted that the PDP will rule for the next 60 years. Two years on, the party that once looked so invisible is turning into an endangered specie if not in the country, then in the politically active Southwest region of the country.

Bashir Ibrahim Yusuf was one time Secretary of the Northern Consultative Group and member, All Nigeria Congress Foundation. He was a Special Assistant to President Obasanjo on Conflict Resolution and served in Mallam Adamu Ciroma’s Northern Political Leaders Forum that selected Atiku Abubakar as consensus candidate.

Chief Barnabas Gemade, former National Chairman of Peoples Democratic Party does not agree Atiku Abubakar is the consensus candidate of the North as he is being projected. ‘I am a Northerner and he does not represent me or my political views’. He dismisses consensus as a reflection of political interest of Mallam Adamu Ciroma and says Atiku is no match for Jonathan’s candidacy.

Goodluck Ebele Azikiwe Jonathan was born on November 20 1957 to a peasant farmer named Jonathan and his wife at their humble homestead in Otuoke, in Bayelsa State . He worked as a Preventive Officer with the Department of Customs and Excise before he secured admission into the Department of Zoology in 1977 as a pioneer student of the newly established University of Port Harcourt where he bagged a Bachelor of Science degree in 1981, graduating with a Second Class Honours (Upper Division).

Atiku Abubakar: A dogged fighterAtiku Abubakar was born in 1946 and joined Nigeria Customs and Excise Department in 1969. Atiku was a political godson of late General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua . He joined Nigerian politics in late 1989 after his retirement from the Nigeria Customs Service in the Peoples Front (PF), which later became the Social Democratic Party, SDP.

Ambassador Ralph Uwechue, President-General of Ohaneze, in this interview, denies claims that the endorsement of President Goodluck Jonatnan was at the instance of the presidency. Uwechue also says Ohaneze’ s decision on zoning was borne out of the need for equity and other issues.
