NEARLY a decade after the demise of its last Ovie, His Royal Highness Asakpakeregha, Onoriji 11, the Owevwe Kingdom in Ughelli North Local Government has concluded plans for the installation a new traditional ruler.

‘Since we were retired, no kobo was paid to me. Every time, we would be called to come to Awolowo Road, Ikoyi, to fill one form after another. Sometimes, we sleep at Awolowo Road on the bare floor, for us to be attended to. In spite of that, nothing has come out of it. It was only in 2010 October that I was paid, since then, no payment. My children are in school, I can’t provide for them. Anytime they come back, we all starve and they will cry all day till they go back. There is nobody to help me except God. My husband died since 2003′

The National Universities Commission (NUC), on Tuesday, 10 September, 2013, organised a workshop on the Development of Learning Outcomes for Benchmark Minimum Academic Standards (BMAS) for undergraduate programmes in the NUS. In a welcome address, the Executive Secretary, NUC, Professor Julius Okojie, said that the first Minimum Academic Standards (MAS) for 13 disciplines, were developed in 1989 and served as a reference document for the first accreditation exercise in the system, in 1990. He said that the MAS was reviewed, in 2004, through a process that led to the evolution of the Benchmark Minimum Academic Standards (BMAS).

The management of the Oduduwa University, Ipetumodu, Osun State, has hired nine professors into different faculties of the institution.

Retirees of the Obafemi Awolowo University OAU, Ile Ife Osun state under the Contributory Pension Scheme, CPS, have called on the Federal Government to review the scheme to give succor to those that have served their country faithfully and selflessly.

The concept of severance still retains the requirement of proving criminal allegations in civil proceedings beyond reasonable doubt because, the ‘severed’ pleadings, with criminal imputations, must still be proved beyond reasonable doubt else the claims founded on them will inevitably fail. Severance seems useful only where there are other pleadings devoid of criminal imputations and which have the suit’s main justiciable claims attached to them.

Dying is a sad reality that has not changed although we humans still struggle to accept the fact that all of us will die- the good, the beautiful and the cerebral. My initial reaction to the news of her death was one of disbelief, I responded to the harbinger of the news impossible and I rejected out rightly that her sojourn on earth has ended. Oh death why should you take our finest? Our Pride, Our nicest, the beautiful and the peaceful? Oh death why? Where is thy sting?

The Executive Director, Corporate Services, UAC Nigeria Plc, Mr. Joe Dada has vowed that the company will do her best to stem the falling education sector in Nigeria. Speaking at the round-off ceremony of the 2013 free holiday coaching organised by UAC under its Goodness League initiative for students of secondary schools in Lagos State, Dada noted that the quest by UAC to arrest the situation has been on since 2008.

THE Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria has opened talks with National Teachers Institute, NTI, with a view to establishing a distance learning centre in the university. A three-man delegation team led by the ABU Dean of Postgraduate School and the Acting Director of the university’s Distance Learning Centre, Prof Adebayo Joshua, met with the management of the NTI in Kaduna on Monday, to discuss the modalities for the centre.

An Osogbo Magistrate’s court in Osun has dissolved a 17-year-old marriage over complaint by the husband that his wife beats him up mercilessly for going to church. The petitioner, Mr. Asimuyu Oladosu, told the court that his wife, Kehinde, beats him whenever he goes to church or vigil and urged the court to dissolve the marriage.
