Retirees of the Obafemi Awolowo University OAU, Ile Ife Osun state under the Contributory Pension Scheme, CPS, have called on the Federal Government to review the scheme to give succor to those that have served their country faithfully and selflessly.
At a briefing in Osogbo on activities lined up to mark the inauguration of Association of Nigeria Universities Contributory Pension Retirees, (ANUCPR) OAU Chapter, the chairman of the association, Alhaji Wahab Olaitan Salau, charged government to fill up the gaps that have not allowed retirees to enjoy their retirement maximally.Salau who expressed disappointment at the treatment of retirees in Nigeria, called for a measure that would put smile on the faces of these senior citizens in the country.
On the objective of the association, Alhaji Salau said it would provide a forum where issues that concern members are properly coordinator for effective performance.
According to him: “Nothing has changed since the introduction of the contributory pension scheme. A process whereby retirees have to wait for three and four years before getting their stipend is demeaning and should be corrected. If the newl policy is not working, then it should be discarded forthwith.” Salau reiterated the association’s commitment to the ideals of the founding fathers of the university, stressing that the association would guide the university management on all vital issues that affect the progress of the institution.
On the ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Salau urged the two parties to find an amicable way of resolving the crisis in the interest of the students and the future of the nation, especially the young generation.
He called on the federal government to embrace the university teachers and do everything to ensure that the teachers return to the classrooms without further delay.
