Nobody saw it coming. Not even seers. For victims and families of the sad incident, last Saturday would forever remain a black day in their lives. Port Harcourt going by its industrial nature is a very busy town. Like the saying goes, “no food for lazy man”. This probably was the driving spirit of most of the victims of the sad incident who defied the heavy downpour that morning to be on the streets to eke out a living

The Anambra State governorship election, together with its outcome, has continued to be the talking point among parliamentarians in Lagos and elsewhere in the country. This was precisely the case at the Cele Bus-stop along the Oshodi-Apapa Expressway recently. It began with a parliamentarian, Chuks Morka, expressing happiness at Governor Peter Obi’s victory and re-election at the polls.

IT was cheery news recently when Governor Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers State and his Abia State counterpart, Governor Theodore Orji, promised at the end of their meeting in Port Harcourt, to partner with a view to addressing the security challenges in border towns between the two states.

Getting to the country home of Chief Mbazulike Amechi in Ukpor Nnewi, was no easy task, even in a Jeep. But when we eventually got there on Wednesday, February 3rd 2010, we met a man of 80 plus a couple of months still standing tall, still handsome and still very sharp in the mind and memory. Our mission was to encounter him in this interview to get a clearer picture of some historical issues surrounding the early political life of Nigeria before it degenerated to the sorry state in which we find ourselves. When I was through with him, he autographed three of his books which I have since found to be invaluable for the better understanding of Nigeria’s early beginnings. We were lucky . By the time many of us were going to school, my father was transferred to the North and in the north the truth was that there was free education. So, he did not need to pay, the way he was paying in Lagos. There is free education in the South West but I think immediately after Chief Obafemi Awolowo left power,(as Premier of Western Nigeria) nobody can really say education was free.

Professor Pat Utomi is a rare individual and many would agree. But he is also a concerned Nigerian. His shot at the presidency in 2007 was considered a fool’s errand in some quarters – a wasted effort – but the man believes and, therefore, insists that it was one wonderful experience which has touched and continues to touch many lives. How? It is about changing the mind set of the leaders of tomorrow, making them realize that Nigeria can not get anywhere with the present template on which it is governed.

I took to bus conducting because that gives immediate money. I was making money and ending some to my mother in Ede. But suddenly a thought came to me to steal the bus which I was conducting. And come to think of it, I have been with my present master for almost one year now and he was very nice to me. Initially, I fought that idea of stealing the bus; but I succumbed after another thought came to assure me that I could make good money with which to settle in live.

When you look at the remaining candidates: Uche Ekwunife, Soludo, Uba, you will see that these three are virtually PDP people. They all belong to PDP just like me. But the difference is that for the first time, a woman has the confidence to run seriously and I believe that we should support her if the polls favour her. I will say the same thing about Soludo who is my friend and Andy Uba. So, my position is that the best candidate should win.

Last Tuesday, the Legal Practitioners Privileges Committee (LPPC) headed by the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Aloysius Katsina-Alu, okayed 19 senior legal practitioners including two academics for admission into the prestigious rank of the Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SAN).

The Commonwealth Lawyers Association, CLA, an international Organisation, which seeks to promote and maintain the rule of law through out the Commonwealth regions by ensuring that the an independent and efficient legal profession with the highest standards of ethics and integrity serves the people of the region, will hold its regional conference in Abuja.

Efforts to tackle human rights abuses which are prevalent in the Africa region, especially in Nigeria received a boost recently with the introduction of the new Fundamental Rights (Enforcement Procedure) Rules (FREP), 2009.
