The Vice Chancellor, Lagos State University, Professor Lateef Hussain has broken silence to shed light on the ongoing union crises in LASU and why he was locked up by unionists for over seven hours in his office to accede to their demands.

It been over a month that members of the Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities and Educational Institutions have been on strike. Indeed NASU commenced a nationwide strike on July 8, 2009 . The strike coincided with that of the Academic Staff Union of Universities and the Senior Staff Association ( SSANU).

Beginning from Monday this week, members of the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) in both state and federal polytechnics, began a one-week warning strike. This is to be followed by a full scale nationwide strike if government fails to accede to their demands.

Graduands of the International School (ISL), University of Lagos, have been reminded during the 2009 Valedictory Service held recently, that quite a n umber of UNILAG first class scholars over the years are products of ISL.

In South Africa, the Apartheid government labeled Nelson Mandela terrorist, Jomo Keyata of Kenya was labeled a terrorist and these people became leaders of their countries. The important thing is this: The Federal Government had the opportunity to have resolved the problems of the oil producing areas, a long time ago, now it has led to loss of lives and property and more insecurity in Nigeria and that for me is what really matters.

THEY went and could not help but marvel at what they saw; so impressed were they that they felt it would not be a bad idea to replicate same at home . The team of Lagos State Government officials which travelled to Dubai in the United Arab Emirate (UAE) and Singapore have since returned to the country after their two-week sojourn and now seem to be in a hurry to bring their experience to bear in transforming Lagos into another Dubai in terms of infrastructural development.

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), will from August 17, 2009, start its week long annual conference in Lagos, which will bring together over 8,000 lawyers. The theme for this year’s conference is ‘Underdeveloped Nations, Failed Economies and Future of the Legal Profession’.. .
