Around him, residents and visitors had gathered not merely to observe a festival, but to step into a way of life rarely glimpsed beyond the creeks and winding waterways of the Niger Delta. It was, in every sense, a homecoming, not of people, but of a people to their own story.

FOR generations, the people of Onya community in Ndokwa East Local Government Area, Delta State, found their identity in the embrace of the River Niger. It was their highway, their treasure and their ancestral anchor.

Carrying placards with inscriptions such as “No Compensation, No Work,” “Give Us Our Right,” and “Enough of Renaissance African Energy Company Limited Divide and Rule Game,” the protesters chanted for justice, accusing the company of occupying their land without paying what they described as adequate compensation to the customary owners.
