IN one fell swoop penultimate Saturday, the Federal Government announced the sack of Vice-chancellors of 13 federal universities.

Electricity distribution companies (DISCOS) across the country in conjunction with the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) were already executing the new tariff they had imposed on Nigerians earlier this year before the intervention of the Senate, last week stopping them from further implementation until the outcome of a public hearing that would be carried out by its relevant committees.

The parlous state of the economy attracted the concern of Nobel Laureate, Prof Wole Soyinka who, after paying a visit to the Information and Culture Minister, Alhaji Lai Mohmmed, last week, called on the Federal Government to summon an emergency economic conference to discuss a hoslitic way out of the current tempetuous doldrums.

We are not surprised at the dust being raised in the bid by the three geopolitical zones of the old Northern Nigeria to obtain what is described as “a multi-billion Dollar” loan from the Saudi Arabia-based Islamic Development Bank (IDB).

The primary responsibility of the military is to defend the constitution and the territorial integrity of the country. Their tough and rigorous training is designed to build their enduring capacity demanded by their calling. That is what differentiates them from civilians. That is why they are confined to the barracks except when on duty.
