Thank God it’s Zambia, but…..
There was this interesting but visibly annoying mail from Eric Ekanem addressed to members of the CAF media in the ongoing Orange Africa Cup of Nations. In it, Mr. Ekanem wanted us to explain to him why it is Zambia and not Cameroun that topped Group D.
Tit Bits from Angola: Haba! I don’t like cheating
Do you know there are seven times the number of women in Angola than men? that will be my focus tomorrow. Dont miss your Vanguard copy. MY MAN OSVALDO ALVARO Yesterday, I introduced you to this column.
Tit Bits from Angola: My mistake, my pleasure!
I made the mistake of suggesting in my weekly column that given the dynamics of football, that my column will not attempt to treat match reports and results as the case may be.
The journey to Angola
The 27th Orange CAF Nations Cup started yesterday in Angola. By tomorrow, the Super Eagles of Nigeria will take centre stage in the only match that will, perhaps determine their fate in the competition.
…..No hiding place in 2010
It was in the year 2009 that Ghana made the Black Continent proud by historically winning the FIFA Junior World Cup.
If you think I am trying to run away from Nigeria you are mistaken. In 2009, Nigeria emerged the champion of African Beach Soccer World Cup elimination. In 2009, Engineer Habu Gumel restored Nigeria’s pride at Olympic level when he was elected into the most prestigious sports board on earth, that of the International Olympic Committee, ( IOC ) .
Glo as metaphor
Globacom’s contract runs out on December 8, but they have the right of first refusal, so we have written to them to offer the Eagles and other national teams at individual values.
Random sports jottings
I woke up this morning to the realisation that there were a lot of sports issues I could not put my fingers on. I woke up to see my phone inundated with text messages of readers seeking my views and opinion on issues they believe I could help.
Youth soccer competition kicks off in Lagos
A youth soccer competition where foreign scouts fish out raw talents has kicked off in Lagos on Sunday. It is called Carl Woermann Nigeria Youth Football Championship. It is in its third edition. In one of the matches played yesterday, Stihl Power Tools Football Club of Badagry held Bosch Tools Football Club of Amuwo Odofin to a 1-1 draw.
…….Pray what does the Honourable Minister want?
There is a joke making the rounds that for election sake, the minister has even forgotten that he gave approval for the recognition of certain sports as Olympic sports, just because their chairmen are now in the opposition! “If there is a platform for contesting against me, it should not be for non performance. Our records are there for all to see,†Engineer Gumel argued.
Legs of God… Hand of God
Trust CNN to stay with bad news. Since Thierry Henry used his hand to help Gallas score that goal, the world has not rested. What fascinates me in the whole story is the news that the French captain admitted that he told the referee it was hand ball.
