I have observed that the prosperity or misery of each people is in direct proportion to its liberties or its prejudices and, accordingly, to the sacrifices or the selfishness of its forefathers. -Juan Crisostomo Ibarra

‘My heartfelt sympathy‘- we’ve heard it before

Tragedy once again has revisited our shores and being in the UK watching the news, makes me feel saddened and despondent. Yet, again there is no decisive plan as to what will be done to rid the country of these nefarious cold blooded murderers.

A healthy democracy requires a decent society; it requires that we are honourable, generous, tolerant and respectful.-Charles W. Pickering

So what makes you a Nigerian?

So what makes you a Nigerian?

We often take our citizenship for granted, we automatically assume the privilege of being a Nigerian is ours for the taking and that we can jolly well use it, discard it at will, when we choose and when it pleases us. We should know that with these privileges come responsibilities. And we should take our responsibilities seriously if we value the privilege of truly being a Nigerian.

FRK-An awesome and formidable Nigerian

“Every generation must recognize and embrace the task it is peculiarly designed by history and by providence to perform.”-Chinua Achebe October 1, marks 54th independence from colonial rule in 1960. Every year, for some time now I have not celebrated Independence Day, as I feel there is so little to celebrate. Some Nigerians are in […]

Fear is the sum total of Nigerians

Fear is the sum total of Nigerians

“I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear.” — Nelson Mandela

“Talk sense to a fool and he calls you foolish”

Just when I thought our politicians could not sink any lower, they then go and show that there are depths lower than low they can easily crawl out of. Last week, my British colleague alerted my attention to a sickening report about Nigeria covered by the BBC and the Washington Post. It seemed that Goodluck’s sycophants had unfurl banners round Abuja, using similar hashtag campaign of the missing Chibok girls. They, in their absolute stupidity and arrogance flew the flag for Jona’s 2015 campaign. Only they could have thought it was right to capitalise on other peoples’ tragedy.

The health of our people

The health of our people

I have wanted to write about the health concerns of our people for some time, but other issues kept getting in the away and so it had been consigned to the back burner for some time until…now. In my day job, I work with the black community in South London.

These trying times, it’s good to talk

These trying times, it’s good to talk

Last week, I said that that there are no permanent enemies or friends, just permanent interests. I believe that to be true. So I pose a question: what is one’s enemies’ enemy called? A friend? Does that then make one’s friend’s enemy, now an enemy? So, it was a surprise that Iran considered joining forces with the US to fight the insurgents in parts of Iran and Syria The Sunni radical of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) is making sworn enemies strange bedfellows.

There is permanent interest but no permanent friends

There is permanent interest but no permanent friends

Who would have thought that the West is considering working with Syria to get rid of ISIS? They say, my friend’s enemy is my enemy. So when does your enemy become your friend? It is all about interest and changes in perspectives. So you see, there is a permanent interest but no permanent friends. At the moment, Oyinlola is very pally pally with Aregbesola. Aregbesola on the election trail goes as far as describing Oyinlola as his brother. Just in case you have forgotten the former was a sworn enemy of the latter. The former Governor stole the mandate of Aregbesola and even swore to run the Ogbeni out of town. You probably remember the Osun/Osogbo episode where the Good Lord saved the Ogbeni from assassination.
