The business of attending to the “stomach infrastructure” of her customers by cooking of rice, beans, plantain and stew in addition to two or three other local delicacies. By 6.30 am She is ready to hit the motor park where her numerous customers are already waiting for her. Indeed, Iya Lati, is one of the hundreds of thousands of women who toil day and night to support their families by hawking foods on the streets of major cities across the country. From Lagos to Abuja, Port-Harcourt to Kaduna and Enugu to Ibadan, food vendors have taken over the streets. In fact, following the harsh economic reality that Nigerians are currently faced with, the business is booming.

YENAGOA—A first time encounter with Daniel Odey Udeh, popularly known as “Man of God” diligently breaking stones and patching up potholes on major streets of Yenagoa metropolis, Bayelsa State, one would mistake him for an employee of the state Ministry of Works or Federal Roads Maintenance Agency, FERMA. Ironically, his worn-down appearance makes look like someone, who ekes out a living from handouts from motorists, but in truth, Udeh is a Civil Engineering graduate of the University of Jos, UNIJOS.
Orphanages to the rescue as number of abandoned, motherless babies rises
The ugly phenomenon of abandoning children has been a social stigma for ages. Just as it is rampant in Oyo State, the story is the same across the country. Only God knows what could have happened if not for the quick and timely intervention of some orphanages and motherless homes. Places like Cheshire, Jesus Kids’ Home for Special Children and Ibadan Motherless Babies Home all in Ibadan give maternal affection and care to these innocent but unlucky children.
