The rainy season is certainly not the best of times for a good round golf. A good round may suddenly come to an end as a result heavy down pour and lightening and good scores go unrecorded should the game be called off.

That was exactly what happened in Ikoyi last weekend as golfers battled for a place in this year’s edition of the Nigeria Cup.

Organisers of the event fixed last Saturday for qualifiers but the weather had a different plan. No sooner than the golfers teed off, the sky opened up and the rains came down heavily.

Ikoyi Club golfers went home unable to qualify for the Nigeria Cup tourney billed for the last week in September to the first week in October this year.

The Golf Course gathered from some players that the heavy down pour stopped them from concluding the qualifiers which teed off with high expectations last weekend.

“We were on hole 11, when the qualifiers was called off. The rain was simply too heavy and we could not continue with the tournament.

The organisers had to move the qualifiers till today and we are praying that it does not rain as heavy as it did last week, we do not want it moved again. Virtually every golfer in Ikoyi wants to be part of the Nigeria Cup, so the excitement is double-charged”, one of the golfers said.

For the Nigeria Cup proper, Vice Captain Gboneme again assured golfers that they are ready to host the best edition of the Nigeria Cup ever held at the club.
