YENAGOA — Reprieve will soon come the way of the traumatised temporary staff of Bayelsa State Environmental Sanitation Authority, as the state government has set in motion, the process of paying them their salary arrears.
Speaking at an interactive session with the authority’s workers in Yenagoa, the state Deputy Governor, Mr. Werinipre Seibarugu, said the payment will, however, be in instalments in view of other contending demands on government.
Seibarugu said as government that means well for the people, it was well aware of the plight of the affected workers and will, therefore, wipe away their tears. He observed that the crisis arose because rules were not followed in the employment process and some staff have not been performing their duties urged the permanent workers to sit up and take their jobs serious or risk losing them.
He assured the workers, that government will look into their complaints, enjoining them to keep the environment clean to avoid creating health hazards for themselves and all Bayelsans.
Also speaking, the Commissioner for Environment, Mrs. Victoria Denenu said the sanitation authority was set up to take care of the environment and ensure the cleanliness of the state.
In his remarks, the Head of Service, Rev. Obegha Oworibo said whatever his office implemented was in line with decisions of the State Executive Council, pointing out that exco decisions were in the best interest of the workers and the state.
Also speaking, the chairman of the State Environmental Sanitation Authority, Chief Reginald Dede, urged the workers to disabuse their minds of the erroneous belief that he was responsible for their plight, adding that he will work with all relevant authorities to bring their problem to an end.
