Confederation Cup war in Aba

By Richard Animam
One man who sat in the panel that employed Swede coach Lars Lagerback to take Nigeria to the World Cup in South Africa Chief Adegboye Onigbinde has said the Swede has no business coming back to Nigeria.

Onigbinde said the Swede “was contracted to take Nigeria to the World Cup and that his contract was only for five months. So why would the present NFA board be interested in bringing the man back to Nigeria”, he queried.

NFA chairman, Alhaji Aminu Maigari has been speaking from both sides of his mouth recently, saying that Lagerback refused to extend his contract and was again quoted to have denied the statement, stressing that Lagerback said he wanted a few days to consult his family before taking a decision on the subject matter.

Onigbinde, cannot understand why the NFA is keen on bringing back the man who performed poorly at the World Cup.
“Lagerback was not employed to develop football in Nigeria. He was employed to take Nigeria to the World Cup and he has done that.

We should be searching for someone who would be saddled with the responsibility of developing our football and not trying to bring Lagerback back”, he said.

On the issue of the NFA giving Heartland FC technical Adviser Samson Siasia a conditional offer, Onigbinde said he does not believe Siasia is the right man for the Eagles job to start with.

“People have been saying Siasia should be given the Eagles job but I want to ask, the players he took to the under age tournaments where he did well, are they truly within the age bracket? These are questions we should ask ourselves.  I am not against Siasia. I told him personally that there is need for him to upgrade himself. I mean no harm but I want things to be done properly”, he said.
