ABA—The Aba Federated Chapel of the Nigerian Union of Journalists, NUJ, Abia State Council, has elected a new leadership, with Mr. Eric Ugbor of the Vanguard newspaper, as chairman.

Others elected include; Godfrey Ofurum , Vice Chairman; Ijendu Iheaka, Secretary; Chinyere Francis, Treasurer; Ngozi Paul , Financial Secretary; among others.

Ugbor, who was elected unopposed after his competitor, Mr. Okey Sampson, withdrew from the race, promised to institute a cooperative society to enhance the welfare of members as well as the unity of the chapel.

He charged members to uphold the ethics of the journalism profession and discharge their duties without fear.

Ugbor described journalism as a noble profession, which must all times promote truth, peace and justice in the development of the society.

“Our role as men of the pen profession is to key into societal growth. We are the watchdogs of the society and must at all times promote truth, good governance, peace and justice. In doing this, we must be guided by ethics of the profession. I urge all members to join hands to make our union great.”

Speaking at the occasion, chairman, Civil Liberties Organization, CLO, Aba Unit, Professor Charles Chinekezi, Special Assistant to Governor on Media, Mr. Okechukwu Keshi Ukaegbu and Mr. Emeka Chigbu, who were observers at the election, described the newly elected chairman as highly experienced and charged him to take the chapel to greater heights.
