Expert laments poor birth registration

AN expert on child health, Mr Sharon Oladiji has raised concern over poor birth registration in the country, saying without accurate and proper birth registration, no nation would get it right in planning for its citizens.

Also, a memorandum of understanding that would facilitate emergency response for children in the event of any natural or humanitarian disaster in the country was yesterday signed between United Nations Children Education Fund, UNICEF, and the Nigerian Red Cross Society.

Mr Oladiji, who is the Monitoring Adviser on Children Issues, the United Nations Children Education Fund said, “unfortunately, today, Nigeria can only boast of two per cent birth registration coverage of under five children, a situation, the expert warned that is impeding on one of the four rights of children under the  Child Rights Act.
