THE Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria, MWUN, are lamenting the low wages at the nation’s seaport following the low volume of cargo arising from adverse economic situation of the country. They, therefore, urge the Federal Government to urgently address the economic recession in the country.

President General of MWUN, Tony Emmanuel Nted, who disclosed this in Lagos, explained that “the wages of dockworkers are tied to the volume of cargo they handle and with the dwindling cargo volume, their take-home can no longer take them home.”

Nted noted that the wages structure for dockworkers was due for review last year but his leadership had decided not to go ahead with the review since the lull in business is also affecting the terminal operators.

According to him, “Before now there was no condition of service but now there is condition of service for the dockworkers. Dockworkers were happy until recently when lull in business at the ports caused by bad government policies that is not allowing goods to come in.”

The MWUN boss said there is need for government to review some of the policies that are affecting business at the port, noting that the federal government seems not to be getting its policies concerning the economy right.

He charged President Muhamadu Buhari to re-jig his economic team to help bring the economy out of recession, noting that most of the officers presently do not really know what to do about the economy.
