Akure—PROTESTS rocked Odigbo area of Ondo State, following the killing of two members of the community by a speeding driver.

It was gathered that residents of the community blocked the Ondo-Ore Expressway, causing traffic gridlock for hours.

They insisted that government should, as a matter of urgency, erect speed breakers on the road to save innocent souls in the town.

Motorists made a detour as the residents turned down entreaties to allow free flow of traffic on the expressway.

Security operatives, who intervened, could not disperse the residents, as they sat on the road, insisting that until the speed breakers are erected they will not leave.

Eyewitnesses told Vanguard that the offending vehicle, a Land Rover SUV, with number plates FEA 162 AA, reportedly swerved off its lane and hit the victims, who were on a motorcycle.

The driver, who was allegedly speeding, was trying to avoid a pothole.

The eyewitness said the driver’s bid to escape resulted in him knocking down another motorcycle conveying two persons, Samani Uba and Fedebi Ayodeji, who died on the spot.

The first motorcycle rider sustained injuries and was rushed to the hospital.

The driver, for fear of being lynched, reportedly fled the scene of the accident, while his vehicle has been towed to Odigbo Police Station.

Contacted, Police image-maker, Femi Joseph, who confirmed the incident, said that the command was investigating the accident.

Joseph told Vanguard: “We have commenced investigation on the matter; the vehicle is with us but the driver has fled.”

The corpses, according to him, has been deposited at a mortuary.
