ASARAMA—THE traditional ruler of Asarama community, Andoni Local Government Area, Rivers State, HRH Appolus Nteija Ewaye VI, Okan-Ama Asarama, has grumbled that government has built police and military posts in the area over the years without deploying personnel to man them.

The monarch, who voiced his feeling when he led a delegation of the community to visit the management of National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, in Port Harcourt, the state capital, over a recent attack and rape of corps members serving in the area, urged government to immediately deploy personnel to the posts.

Condemning the attack and rape, which he said were not committed by his people, the monarch called on both the federal and state governments to provide security in the area. He bemoaned that such incidents occurred in his domain.

His words: “Following the recent state of insecurity, barbaric, unwholesome attacks and rape on NYSC members serving in our community, we, the chiefs and people of Asarama, consequently, condemn these criminal acts in the strongest terms and dissociate the community from same.”

Contributing he said: “In view of the complex geographical situation and terrain of Asarama that normally compounds our state of insecurity. We therefore, call on the Federal Government to re-establish security presence in Asarama.

“It is incredible to note that in the 21st Century, a place like Asarama, the gateway to Andoni with its complex amphibious nature- being accessed by both land and rivers does not have any security presence. It is indeed, very sad. We call on our amiable governor, Chief Nyesom Wike, in his drive towards a crime- free Rivers state to urgently get the police authorities to give Asarama a Divisional Police Station since the needed infrastructure (police station and barracks) are already in place, awaiting personnel posting.”
