Antagonists of the FIFA 2022 World Cup to be held in the Gulf state of Qatar are not leaving anything to chance in their bid to truncate the staging of the event in Qatar even as the country has been working ahead of schedule for the event, a report indicates.

A latest report published by Tribune de Genève, a French-language Swiss newspaper has it that an NGO paid for workers’ testimonies on Qatar.

The report said Gongalla Sanjeeva Reddy, an International Trade Union Congress (ITUC) Vice President and frequent critic of ITUC General Secretary, Sharan Burrow, has sent a letter to the Director General of the International Labor Organisation (ILO), Guy Ryder, claiming to have proof that the ITUC paid workers on World Cup construction sites for negative testimonies relating to their human rights.

The brief article goes on to explain that Reddy added in his letter that the ILO referenced the ITUC’s false evidence in a report on living conditions among foreign workers on 2022 construction sites.

Qartar has been under severe criticism by the ITUC and some western governments since FIFA, under the leadership of the former President, Seppuku Blatter, awarded the 2022 World Cup hosting rights to the country. Criticisms on the rights of workers working at the numerous construction sites often lacked substance even after measures were taken to check some alleged abuses in the past.

On its part, the government of Qatar has initiated numerous stringent measures to ensure construction companies adhere to best international practice on the rights of their workers.
