Awka—NO fewer than 34 suspected members of some cult groups and kidnappers were yesterday paraded in Awka by the Anambra State police command, just as 48 others that had been terrorizing the people of Obosi and its environs also renounced their membership of the dangerous groups at the police headquarters in Awka.
Twenty one of those paraded were students of Nnamdi Azikiwe University and Federal Polytechnic, Oko who, according to the Anambra State commissioner of police, Mr. Hosea Karma, belong to groups such as Vickings fraternity, Aire, among others, while 13 were suspected kidnappers and car snatchers.
Items recovered from them included locally made guns, live and expended ammunition, large quantities of Indian hemp, black and red candles used for initiating new members, masks and cutlasses.
According to the commissioner, most of the hoodlums use Obosi as their base, adding that his men had been on their trail for a long time until most of their leaders were arrested.
He said that the arrest of the hoodlums was made possible through a joint effort of the special task force consisting of the police, the army, the navy and members of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, set up by the Anambra State government.
Karma said: “When we raided Obosi last year, most of them ran to other states and we went there to arrest them. The unfortunate thing is that many of these bad boys are under aged and that is why we are appealing to parents and guardians to monitor properly the movements and activities of their children.”
